Project 2 : Community Development & Engagement Centre

For this project, students required to design a cultural community development and engagement centre for Mah Meri, a group of indigenous people or "orang asli" who resides in the Carey Island. which is about 28km south of Klang town. It is a simple public building with some complexity that includes the complexity of site topography and vegetation, socio-cultural events, and variety of strategies for sustainable design. The objective of this project is to develop awareness of environmental sustainability in architectural design.

The site of this development and engagement centre is located in Mah Meri Cultural Village at the Kampung Orang Asli Sungai Bumbun, Pulau Carey, Selangor. The requirement of this centre is to have 2-3 storeys within 800 sq.m and explore design solutions that reduce environmental impact utilizing clustered spatial typology and passive design approach.

After visiting and carrying out the site analysis of Mah Mari, i have deeply influenced by their thought and respect towards nature, which generated my concept "harmony". while designing the project, i cooperated and made use of existing vegetation to create architectural spaces with consideration of environmental poetics in relation to the basic natural context and existing built context which impact on user's needs and experiences. lastly, i managed to produce 2 D and 3D drawings based on a clustered spatial typology.
