Project 1a : Developing An Architectural Position

The module is a thematic studio based on the theme of "sustaining humanities"- architecture for people, place and time. Design for sustainability has been a fundamental issue for architects in out ime within global and regional contexts. In line with the current discourse on sustainability, it upholds the belief that architecture can create better places, that architecture can affect society and humanity, and that ut can have a role making a place civilized by making a community more liveable.

For the project 1a, we were required to make a site analysis of the site we chose, where was in Malacca, at Jalan Laksamana.

Project 1c : Sustaining Humanities

In addition to students's ability to develop their own position within the theme of "Sustaining Humanities"- Architecture for people, place and time, one key aspect of the design project is to develop holistic and integrated aspects of technology, environment and cultural context in architectural design. Subsequent to Phase 2: Design Strategy and Sketch Design Phase, students are required to develop environmental strategies and technological resolutions with the main intent to strengthen their design exploration and ideas,  and complement our design through a comprehensive design report. the phase is carefully integrated with Building Technology 2 module and Project Management
The objective of this project is to consolidate an understanding of the holistic nature of the architectural design process, to a given degree of detail, with emphasis on design as an integrative process, drawing as appropriate on previous subjects of the program.

Through the project i have learnt:
- Produce design development drawings with a suitable level of complexity
- Design with considerations of building performance (thermal comfort, acoustic and lighting), Regulatory frameworks, health and safety considerations
- Produce 2D and 3D drawings, modelling, verbal presentation and a design report to communicate and visualize architectural design and ideas.

Project 1 : Performance Evaluation

in a group of 6/7, we had to chose a place and evaluate their environment which in terms of lighting and acoustics performances. Each group was required to choose a case study from the list of buildings provided and prepare a measured drawing with appropriate scale of the chosen place. Show all the necessary features which effect on the lighting and acoustics conditions of our case study.
we had to carry out an appraisal of day-lighting, artificial lighting , noise and sound condition (Quality and Quantity) in the selected case study. Their indemnification of adequacy of the quantity of light and sound/ noise for the case study needed to be carried out objectively.

For Lighting
-  The site conditions (sky condition, building orientation, etc)
-  Take readings of daylight level, lighting level and photos (digital images) in the chosen case study at different times of day (morning, noon, afternoon and at night).
-  Present the analysis in a lighting contour diagram.
-  Quantitative analysis is required in order to present your findings in conclusions.
-  Daylighting and lighting condition (identify the problems)
-  Present all your findings graphically as much as possible
-  Provide the calculation for the existing design.
For Acoustic
-  The general site conditions (eg. Highway, main roads adjacent to your case study)
-  Take readings of sound level indoor and outdoor and photos (digital images) in the chosen case study at different times of day (morning, noon, afternoon and at night).
-  Present the analysis in a noise contour diagram.
-  Quantitative analysis is required in order to present your findings in conclusions.
-  Indoor and outdoor noise (identify the problems)
-  Present all your findings graphically as much as possible
-  Provide the calculation for the existing design.

through this project , i able to
  • Able to produce a complete documentation on analysis of space in relation to lighting requirement eg. natural and artificial lighting. (Pictures, sketches and drawing) and analysis of factors which effects the lighting design of a space.
  • Explore and apply understanding of building physic eg. Lighting towards building / construction technology and building materials on existing building projects.
  • Able to evaluate and explore the improvisation by using current material and technology in relevance to present construction industry
  • Basic understanding and analysis of lighting layout and arrangements by using certain methods or calculations eg. Lumen method and PSALI.
  • Basic understanding and analysis of acoustic design layout and arrangements by using certain methods or calculations eg. Reverberation time and sound transmission coefficient.

Project 2 : Integration with Design Studio 5

For this project, each student was required to incorporate 1 A2 board of summarized analysis for lighting integrated design and 1 A2 board of summarized analysis for acoustics integrated design. Within the library design, we were required to identify spaces which require artificial lighting and day-lighting. Also for acoustic, we were required to identify spaces to integrate the external nooises and internal noises, integration must be solution based and we were advised to incorporate visual, diagrams and renderings using Ecotect or any other environmental design analysis tools in our presentation boards. in the end the day, calculations to resolve our design integrations solution must be attached in A4 and submit with A2 boards.

Through this project , i able to :
- produce site analysis which document, interpret and analyse the site context in relation to lighting and acoustics
- identify and analyze functional needs through case studies to inform of lighting and acoustics

Project 1 : Industrialized Building System

In a group of 6, the group assignment predominantly relates to the topics of industrialized Building System (IBS)as well as the material's embodied energy. Before embarking on this project students will exposed with different types and methods of the IBS system and the calculation of embodied energy of different building materials in the classroom. This project consisted of two parts. in the first part, each group required to conduct their own study on a building which was constructed using IBS to understand the components better. In the second part, the group has to construct a model of a 3-storey apartment building to imitate the actual IBS construction process and to record all the process in a video.

the objective of this project and i have learnt :
1. To develop students’ understanding in different types of IBS construction method.
2. To apply appropriate IBS construction method in the production of a model for an apartment building.
3. To demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of IBS construction process through model making.
4. To develop students’ understanding in matters related to energy efficiency and ecological impact. 5. To foster good communication skills among group members through proper delegation of works and production of the video.

Project 2 : Design Anatomy

This assignment is aligned with the Studio Design Project (semester 5) and aims to facilitate students in the technical studies and development of their design. It deals with the analysis and establishment of the structural and the envelope systems of the student’s design to ensure that the design has logical and workable construction systems. It also encourages students to think about construction as integral part of the design and not just the afterthought. Most of the times amateur designers tend to design their spaces without thinking about the construction aspects and later on have to change and redesign their schemes due to the designs were undecidable. This assignment was design with the intention to tackle this issue and to increase the technical competency of students.

Project 1 : Preliminary Studies

The preliminary studies is a preparatory assignment that focuses on investigating basic notions of the city, and learning from examples of community libraries around the world. The assignment aims to firstly introduce students to basics in urban design and its relation to architecture, and secondly, studying and determining the programmatic function, societal role and spatial layout of a community library and architectural responses for urban infills.

the site we were assigned to do a detail site analysis is called Brickfields, an upcoming downtown area in Kuala Lumpur where have a strong indian background and culture. the preliminary studies comprises of three components : site Documentiation, Site Analysis and Precedent studies of Urban Infills and Community libraries. The site documentation and site analysis had equipped students with a firm understanding of the site for the community library's design. Besides that, the precedent studies provided an insight into architectural responses for designing an urban infill contemporary community library .

Through this project i have learnt :

1. To have an overview of the formation of cities and introduce basic concepts of urban design in relation to architectural design
2. To introduce and implement basic methodologies of urban studies
3. To investigate the role of community libraries in traditional and contemporary urban societies
4. To examine various examples and architectural responses for urban infills
